Los Angeles County statistics show that alcohol, methamphetamine, fentanyl, heroin, cocaine and oxycodone respectively are most likely to cause death. In the Los Angeles Metro, Hollywood and West Hollywood area, 6.8% deaths are drug and/or alcohol related, 19.2% of the adult population binge on alcohol and 7.4% misuse prescription medications.

Substance Abuse in Los Angeles County (LACHS)

 

2.7 million Californians, or about 8% people, were diagnosable as having addiction (substance use disorder). Of that population, six percent abused or were found dependent on alcohol, and 3% met the criteria for a substance use disorder involving one or more illicit drug.

 

The rate of substance use disorder among young adults (18 to 25 years) was approximately twice the overall average. Adults 26 and older were nearly three times more likely to have alcohol use disorders than illicit drug use disorders.

 

The number of alcohol related Los Angeles County emergency department visits increase by 82% within an eight-year period. Excess alcohol use related to direct and indirect costs of $10.3 billion in Los Angeles County. Of the priority of drug and alcohol related problems, prescription drug misuse, marijuana availability to youth, binge and underage drinking and methamphetamine abuse (including youth) are priority.

 

Of those who die of drug overdose, an average of thirty-one (31) years of life are lost. Marijuana related traffic accident fatalities have increased 510% since decriminalization.
